Obituaries contain information about a person's life, their death,
place of burial, surviving relatives and contact information for the funeral
home.
Obituaries have long been used to help with genealogy research.
The Internet has allowed people to store obituary records into various
online obituary archives. This has brought access to online obituary records
much more easier for genealogy researchers.
Newspaper obituaries are among the most popular form of online obituaries.
Other obituaries published in journals, and by funeral homes, are also
available online. Most newspapers publish their recent obituaries online.
A fabulous source of obituaries can be found in the archived newspapers
of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library (formerly known as theIllinois
State Historical Library).
If you know the exact (or very close) date of a death or burial
which occurred in Illinois. I would suggest contacting the Abraham
Lincoln Presidential Library, which has a wonderful archive of Illinois
Newspapers on microfilm. You can request that they do a search for
you. If they find the information you are seeking, they will send
you a photocopy of the section of the newspaper in which the incidents
are featured.
